Commonwealth Architects transformed a 19th century locomotive manufacturing warehouse into Bow Tie Cinema’s Movieland at Boulevard Square. Movieland features a 17 cinema theater with stadium seating, restaurant and retail space and landscaped ample parking. In addition, the site’s unique rail history was incorporated into the design of the building and of the landscape. The project has brought first-run movies back to the city, while also honoring the City of Richmond’s history and architectural heritage.
Commonwealth Architects’ rehabilitation of the former Miller & Rhoads Department Store into a Hilton Garden Inn and Miller& Rhoads Residences breathed new life into a neglected retail structure creating a vibrant mixed-use development for dining, shopping and living in downtown Richmond. The project includes 133 residential units, a 250 room hotel, indoor pool, fitness centers, ballroom, covered entry plaza, 234 car parking garage, outdoor terraces, dining room, bar, restaurant and common areas for public functions. This adaptive reuse project has helped fuel the continued rehabilitation and revitalization of the commercial heart of downtown Richmond.
Each year, AIA Richmond sponsors design awards to celebrate the best of the Richmond area’s newest architecture, to recognize achievement in a broad range of architectural work by licensed architects as well as interns, to recognize the special contributions to the built environment by individuals outside of the profession and to inform the public of the breadth and value of the architectural practice.
