'Prisoners of Love': Thinking Outside the Candy Box

The brainchild of Richmond performer Slash Coleman and Richmond blogger Jennifer Lemons, "Prisoners of Love" will premiere at Crossroads Art Center on Saturday, February 12th.

CONNECTING LIVE+WORK+PLAY

Jennifer Lemons, also known as The Checkout girl, is the author of the popular series "100 Bad Dates" that appeared on RVANews.com, and currently writes the weekly column "Off The Clock" for the same site. Slash Coleman is best known for his award winning PBS specials on storytelling.

The 60-minute production is meant to challenge the premise of Valentines Day with tales of broken hearts, doomed relationships, and misplaced affections.

"We created this show as an alternative to the usual yawn-yawn options that plague Valentines Day," says Lemons. "It's meant to appeal to storytelling fans, comedy aficionados and hopeless romantics."

"Exactly," says Coleman. "What options are out there? If you're single you can go out and be a third wheel somewhere and if you're a couple you can go out and drop a bundle on a bland, overpriced meal and a Ashton Kutcher movie. Yawn! Yawn!"

Since meeting on Twitter earlier this year, Slash Coleman and Jennifer Lemons found they had many things in common: They both like to make people laugh, they both tell a mean story, and they both suck at love. It's only natural, then, that they would come together to tell stories about love, frisky relations, and how to make a mess of the whole darn thing.

The production also includes guest appearances by renowned physical comedian, Becca Bernard, sculptor Mike Coleman, live classical and jazz music, readings from the "Internet Dating Anthology," "Robot Hearts" (Pinchback Press 2010), and free gift give-aways throughout the night from Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Tinkers and local restaurants.

"Prisoners of Love" will take place on Saturday, February 12, 2011. The 6:30 pm show is for couples only and costs $30 per couple. The 9:00 pm show is for singles only and costs $15 per ticket. Tickets for the event may be purchased on-line at www.slashcoleman.com.
