A good adventure, the kind that is hard earned and results in tall tales best told around a campfire with a beer, often begins with a solid traveling companion. Sometimes that means connecting with just the right travel buddy and other times it’s hitting the road solo with just the right adventure mobile. For Peter Guyre and Joey Darragh, founders of Sender Vans, it’s a mix of both.
This Richmond based duo has logged in countless hours outside, from mountain biking in Pisgah to rock climbing in the Sierras. Most of their adventures have required pounding the pavement and overnighting in Peter’s self-built Ford Transit conversion van. As they began to rack up a list of adventures that would make any vagabond proud, a funny little thing began to happen. Joey and Peter tapped into a shared desire to build out the ultimate adventure vehicle. This ongoing quest led to the creation of Sender Vans, a new business in Scott’s Addition that offers other adventure seekers a chance to build the van of their dreams or an opportunity to dial in their current ride.
There’s no concept that is off the table when it comes to Sender Vans. Joey and Peter also offer installation services, consultations, and a growing list of top-tier wholesale suppliers to trick out any build. Their shop is home to an industrial CNC machine (for precision cabinetry, panels, and custom pieces) and a team that includes engineers with years of automotive experience, including advanced engineering work at Tesla.
And if you’re thinking these two look familiar, it’s because they’ve been busy making Richmond a better place for outdoor fans for years. In 2015, Joey co-founded Väsen Brewing Company, a Scott’s Addition based brewery that is an avid supporter of local outdoor and environmental organizations. Prior to entering the craft beer scene, Joey focused on design and integration of electrical and mechanical systems as well as automation and smart controls. He earned his stripes at a few places you may have heard of, like Apple and Tesla. As for Peter, he too is celebrated among the outdoor community in RVA and beyond. Peter is known for his ongoing efforts to make climbing safe and to get the entire community involved in the sport that he loves. Back in 2014, he built his first van while working as a professional climbing guide. He has over 20 years experience as a contractor including custom woodworking, designing retail spaces, kitchens, and bathrooms. He’s also the resident craftsman and CNC guru at Sender Vans.
