Bike-In-Theater

Whether you’ve been riding since you first set out on training wheels or are gearing up to start a new two-wheeled hobby, you’ll fit right in at Bike-In-Theater. The only requirement for admission is the love of cycling.

In lieu of driving to the event, riding is encouraged.

Started by Hunter Davis of Home on the James video production team, this program, featuring bike-themed movies, offers the time and space for conversation and story exchange. For many, it’s simply an opportunity to completely tune out and watch “bicycle porn.”

“Bike-In-Theater gives biking enthusiasts not only the opportunity to go on a ride and do what they like to do but also enables them to continue the experience post-adventure with friends by watching what they love to do,“ says Davis.

The first two Bike-In-Theater events this spring were hosted at Crossroads Coffee & Ice Cream, due to the java joint’s close proximity to the trails that hug the south bank of the river—and of course, the variety of post-ride beverages. With support from Aviva Rentals, the films were projected both indoors and out, so you could see the films no matter where you chose to sit. Other bike friendly supporters have included Boho Cycle Studio, Whitworth Cycles, and Greater Richmond Grid magazine.

As a post-ride event, Bike-In-Theater has quickly become known for the community it has formed around bike-themed films, whether they be large production or small and homemade. Davis plans to have one Bike-In-Theater per season, with each event highlighting different aspects of cycling and featuring a variety of local vendors.

“The trail systems and endless road routes in Richmond are gems for the city and definitely something to celebrate,” says Davis. “With the 2015 UCI Road World Championships coming to Richmond, the biking community has much to be proud of.”
