Little Quirks

Richmond is a city that continues to change over time. Even though there is new being built around the old, the vintage atmosphere of the city creates a nostalgic feel for the people living in it. I believe that part of this nostalgia is in the signs displayed throughout time. Creating a storyboard for the everyday passerby, signs – whether old or new – play a crucial role in RVA.

Old signs that are still hanging today have set the bar for new signs that are created. These signs have a uniqueness that cannot be replicated. Imagining these signs displayed in the past makes one think about how they were viewed. Were they critiqued as we critique new signs and advertisements today? Did they have the iconic meaning that they do now? Or is it only time that has allowed them to become a stronger way of conveying a product or slogan?

Battered by rust or Mother Nature, many of Greater Richmond’s signs have held their ground and proved that they are worthy of being shown. Whether iconic or run-of- the-mill, they are special to the community surrounding them.

Going around town and looking for unique or iconic signs to take photos of, I tend to enjoy the older signs more than the new ones. Specifically, I am most interested in the signs that are less noticeable or recognized by society. These signs have a certain character that others may not. Old or new markings on the side of buildings are understated or not as easily seen. A simple parking lot sign deteriorating on the wall still has the ability to bring comic relief to the everyday struggle to find parking. Although the sign may appear to be beaten and old, these seasoned veterans still have relevance and importance today.

It is important to be aware of one’s surroundings. In today’s world, we need to slow down and recognize the importance of little things, such as signs, which have made such a big impact upon our society. After all, without signs, we would have no direction.
