Happy RVA

Richmond is the birthplace of America. It has blessed my family, my career, and my life. My 8 children are scattered now – Florida, Texas, California, Minnesota, parts unknown, and in heaven. They have learned love, courage, and the rewards of exploration from our home on the Southside. I’m extremely grateful.

Richmond artist Happy Kuhn has splashed and dripped his unconventional trademark from New York to California, Mexico to Canada, Brazil to Santa Domingo, and on worldwide television. His work, which he calls “play” has drawn the attention, compliments and personal responses from notable figures like Ted Kennedy, George Bush, Gerald Ford, Mickey Mantle, Sam Irving, and Arlo Guthrie. Mayor Dwight C. Jones recently issued a proclamation, “Make Someone Happy Day,” honoring Happy the Artist. Happy can be spotted around RVA, with his dog Oh My God by his side, giving people hugs.

Richmond has made me Happy the Artist, true in every sense. The entire Greater Richmond is Happy’s neighborhood. Here are a few tips to being happy, along with a handful of my favorite “happyisms.”

The trick to being happy, is just being happy.
I spend my money in local counties and towns.
When the dreamer loses his reputation, he’s no longer the dreamer. He’s free.

  • I support panhandlers whenever I can. If you think about it, we’re all panhandlers, feeding on the success of others. And they always say, “God Bless You.” I like that.
  • Our heart runs the show, our thoughts are just actors. Our hearts are satellites of the sun, a furnace in our chests.
  • I wave to everyone.
  • We are Living On Vital Energy (LOVE). It’s quite simple – everything else is detail.
  • I used to believe; then I graduated into “knowing.” That’s where “happiness” is kept.
  • Community Assistance — I paint arrows around street potholes to warn other drivers.
  • We were all given this big Golden Bubble of Light. It’s invisible, but it’s there. You have to know that. All our children have the Golden Light Bubble around them. Our hearts are in the middle of the Golden Bubble. The Bubble shields our negative energy. It’s great.
  • I pose for pictures…and autographs.
  • I talk to folks about the alternative reality.
  • I get lots of hugs.
  • If you’re not happy, what are you waiting for?
